Day 165: Scatter-brained lessons from today's work

Before we get into writing, can I just say that our Disney-themed Christmas tree is the best thing ever when it comes to a view from my reading nook?

That's right. I read today.

So today was full of interesting little knick knacks of writing. I wrote a few poems for a greeting card call for submission. I finished a really good rhymey gushy one for Mother's Day, and then it said they didn't want rhyming poems. Cool. That's cool. It wasn't like I wrote one that rhymed because I failed to read the instructions closely ...

My mom liked it, anyway.

So I sat down, I read some more short fiction, and then I went to writing my Snow Queen adaptation again.

And here's a fun fact: short stories are hella easier to write than whole novels. They are a lot easier to read, too. So I guess that when Jim Kelly said to learn the craft through short stories, I should have listened to him from the get-go. Thanks, Jim Kelly.

So reading short stories and learning from them, writing short stories and paying attention to language, have culminated in getting some nice comments back on my first chapter. My deficiencies are strengthening, and that's a good sign.

Who knew, working out muscles would make them able to carry more weight?
